Bit of a break

Just got back from 4 days away with my wife and boy.

Didn't take laptop, would have been a waste of time anyway as there was no wi fi coverage. Not played poker for a good few days now, decided to have christmas off it.

Back on it next week, Dusk Till Dawn on Thursday or Friday.

Oh - and just booked a week in Las Vegas - more about that tomorrow.

Bankroll: Unchanged.

Happy New Year

Good weekend so far

Spent 7 hours grinding it out on William Hill Poker last night, played a series of Sit and Gos and some cashgames. Paid off. For an investment of c. £250 in entries. I came away with £620, a good return in anyone's book. Surprisingly most of that was made by cashing in 4 successive STT's.

Best hand of the night was in a $2/$5 No Limit Hold Em cash game, as Dealer got dealt QQ, did some standard raising, got 4 out of 8 players in with me at $10. Flop came QQA. By the time the betting came to me, all 4 were at $10 each in the pot, 2 of them called my $30 raise. Turn was a 10, 1 check (?) 1 $10 bet, my raise to $50, Chubby Checker re-raised to $100. Seat 2 folded, I suspect he had A with a weak kicker. I called. River was 5 (I think) Chubs went All In (only about $30) I called (only $15). He shows Ace Ten. TWO PAIR? Madness. Just over $400, thank you very much.

Worst hand of the night was 10 hands later when I broke every single rule I usually operate under when playing NL cash games. On Big Blind, I get dealt J4. Standard 3 x Raise, 4 callers...hmm. Flop is something like K72, I bet $20, 3 callers, no raising. Turn comes King. I bet $100, it's a massive over bet, stupid really, but I was feeling brave. 1 caller, the small blind who had checked before each of the previous 2 rounds of betting. It's obvious he's slow playing a monster, so obvious I walked right into it. River is 6. He bets $50. I go All In. He calls within 1 nano second, ok he's only into me for about another $50 as he is shorter stacked, but still.

He's holding K7. He got 2 pair on Flop and a Full boat on Turn. I had NOTHING. Shameful poker really.

I turned my attention to STT's after that.

Still all in all, a good night, could have been a great one, but I'll take a 250% profit every night if I can.

What a disaster

Was enthusiastic, excited, full of anticipation, when reality came and took a massive dump on my head. Dusk Till Dawn was not my favourite place last night. (it is now I've had time to reflect)

Got TT busted quite early on by 67 unsuited in a straight, my own fault for not betting enough when the flop came out seemingly all rags. Left me with quarter of my stack, limped along until the break. Rested. Refreshed. Up for the challenge, I've done it before, clawed back from the brink of oblivion to the final table, did it a couple of weeks ago in fact, however not tonight Josephine.

Big Blind, AQ, All In, Called. Up against Jacks. Flop. JT rag, give me the King, give me the king. Rag. COME ON, KING? 3. Goodnight.

To make matters worse, I didn't stick around for the cash games, and scrapped the side of my new car on the gate post as I exited the car park. Quoted £250 just for a touch up. Should I take that out of my Bankroll? No. Mr Visa can pay for it.

I hate Poker.

An alternative Poker Glossary

Just for a bit of fun, I've listed my own vesion of the usual Poker Glossary which my friends and I have been using for the last few years, it certainly baffles players if we use these as descriptors for hands!

AA - Usually known as Bullets, we started off calling this 'The 4th Emergency Service' after a UK advertising campiagn by the Automobile Association, then we got onto the booze link and called it Alcoholics Anonymous, this developed into using celebrities in the news for drink problems as the names, so we had Gazza and Bestie, Oliver Reed and the current favourite is Amy, after Winehouse, even if booze is the least of her worries.

KK - Cowboys? This has been Kevin Keegan for as long as I can remember and variations on that theme. "I'd love it, just love it if you've got King Kevin" etc. However recently we've gone for the Brokeback Mountain theme and called them Jake and Heath. Keegan is still my favourite.

QQ - Ladies, San Francisco pair, simply a couple of Nortons (after Graham) or another high profile gay celebrity, take your pick really. Nortons is the best one though.

JJ - Fish Hooks? Not since Jay Jay Okacha signed for Bolton a few years back. Since then JJ has simply been Okacha.

TT - Famous footballers number 10s, the dream strike force really, Law and Pele? Ruud and Didier? We also call it the Hand of God - Diego Maradona wore 10 when he punched the ball past Shilton. Hand of God is the best one.

More later, Poker is about to start.

Mansion Poker

I think it's about time I gave Mansion Poker a go, they are always advertising their huge overlay tournaments, and indeed I signed up last night and could see that they are regularly adding 30% to 50% of the total prize pool in as an overlay.

How long can that last? I'll give them a shot over the weekend / Christmas period and see what they are like, might be a decent way of building the bank roll

Working from home today, glad to be out of that miserable office now until the New Year. Missing out on Secret Santa, but frankly who gives a sh1t, it's only be edible underwear or comedy boxer shorts. Last year I was involved in 2 secret santas. I put loads of thought into the gifts, spent time researching the recipients and what they liked / disliked. Both still use their gifts on a daily basis.

I got.... a pair of underpants with an elephant on the front with a hollow trunk. And a bra and panties set (christ knows why) made out of candy on elastic. I think they are both still under my desk.

What's the point of all the Christmas celebration at work anyway, who gives a feck? I went in on Monday to see that some cretin had literally covered my desk in tinsel, sellotaped it around my monitor, back of my chair etc. I wouldn't have decorations in my house if it weren't for my son.

I suggested that we have a charity box for the local school with 1 card which people could donate rather than sending cards out to people they can barely stand speaking to, let alone sending cards to. You pop your money into the box and sign the card.

Yesterday we sent the money and the card to the school.

I put £4 in the box and signed it.

There were 6 other signatures on the card.

There was £5.15 in the box.

That means the average donation by the 6 was less than 20p. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?

Anyway, it's Dusk Till Dawn night tonight, £50 + £5 buy in, should be at least 100 runners, probably a few more, might get up to £2k for the winner. I am very excited about this. Very impressive place that DTD.

A mixed day of luck

Got a letter today from Littlewoods reminding me that I still had £60 in my account, I was going to add it to my bankroll, but thought I'd play it in a $1/$2 NL cash game instead. Got dealt AA 10th hand as dealer, the table had flat called the big blind or folded, I put in a $20 raise and got called by 3 players. Flop came AK7. Small bet made by first player to act, 3 calls, again big bet, called by 2. Turn, 4. $50 bet goes in from seat 1. I'm thinking he's holding AK. There is no flush out there. I call. River comes 7. Mild panic sets in as I wonder whether he's made quads. He checks, makes me more nervous. I've got about $30 left, talk about pot committed, I push them in, he calls.

He's got KK, he made his boat with KKK77 but got beat by my AAA77.

I'm sitting on $190. Basically just trebled my money.

I sit around for about an hour, folding mainly, going fishing on my blinds when I get dealt 6c7c on the big blind.

The table has called round to me, I put in a standard 3 x raise, half table calls, half folds. flops comes, all clubs QT2. Seat 3 bets at it, $30. Folds to me, I re-raise him $60, he reraises me $90. At this point I know he's out kicking me, but has he got 2 of them. I don't think he has, I want to put him out of the hand, I don't want him thinking he can go for his 50/50ish chance of getting a flush with cards 4 or 5. I push all in. He calls, he's got more chips than me.

Pot has almost $500 in it.

Cards on the backs. I was right, he's got Ac Qs.

Turn Qh. Christ now he's got a few outs. Another Q gives him Quads, and Ace, Ten or 2 gives him a full boat and a club gives him a bigger flush than me. River....................4.....clubs.

That's me. p1ssed off, logged off and buggered off (to pub at top of street for 3 speed Stellas).

Won't be logging onto Littlewoods Poker again in a hurry (yes I know it's the same as William Hill, Dusk Till Dawn Online, etc etc but it's the feeling it gives you isn't it...no?)

First Post

Finally worked out how to set up the blog I have been talking about writing, it's only taken me 12 months. The purpose of the blog is to share my journey from office nobody into the poker world and see how far we get.

I'm no Anthony Holden with a ready bankroll to start playing big events, I'm starting from the bottom, entering £1/£2 No limit cash games or £50 to £100 tournaments to see how I fare.

My aim is to post regularly, as soon as I can to the end of the event I am talking about so that the readers (if I get any) can share the experiences as first hand as I can make them.

Each blog post will have the bank roll total at the bottom of it, and the significant events that have occured since the blog started. Today is December 19th 2007.

Bankroll: £370 carried forward from recent final table finish at Dusk Till Dawn and a couple of modest cash wins on William Hill Poker last night.
